The genre of African choral and vocal music is often referred to as Mbube, which is derived from this song. The song focuses on the use of voices rather than drums. There is the familiar call-and-response element in this song, with both the background harmonies and the lead singer. In this original version (above), Linda sings the high soprano part over a four part harmony in the background. In 1939, Solomon Linda, a South African musician from Zulu, wrote the song “Mbube,” which in Zulu means “lion.” This a cappella song was the original version of the popular songs “Wimowheh” and “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” Linda’s song is one of the greatest examples of how African music has influenced American music.
